PROJECT - Promoting Reading And Culture Amongst Children
Larteh is a Guan community on the Akuapim Ridge with a rich cultural heritage. The language of the people is unique and binds them togerther. However, modernity is gradually adulterating the richness and authenticity of the language and this has become a worry to the Chiefs and Elders of the locality. This is especially a bother, when one considers the fact that;
- It depletes the Cultural heritage of the Community
- Language plays a key role in rich cultural heritage and should be handed down to the youth properly because they are our future leaders.
- Reading and writing contributes to the improvment of the literacy rate of the whole community at large

The second problem that has become a bother to the people of Akwapim-North which includes Larteh is that, academic performance has dropped drastically over the years. The glory of priding themselves of having quality education on the Akwapim Ridge has become a thing of the past. Stakeholders of the district (District Assembly, Ghana Education Office, Religious bodies, Civil Society Groups and the General Public) have attributed these fallen standars of education to children not reading enough to improve their knowledge and vocabulary levels in the English language. As a result, the traditional authorities of Larteh are in support of hat Trend Vogue intends to do in promopting reading amongst children in thier community
How LACOLT comes in - OUR SOLUTION
Partnership with Community Leaders
LACOLT has succefully partnered with the community leaders of Larteh, as the first step of gaining the trust and confidence in the guardians of the inhabitants within the district. The partnership is also an efficient means of transporting information accross to all guardians in the town, as not everyone is abreast with technology or use a mobile phone
Age Target
Our next step was to target children who are between the ages of 4 to 15. Generally, children who fall within the age bracket are the Basic Education (KG 1 to JHS 3) level. Now since We have narrowed down our target, we are able to tailor a well crafted learning routine to suit our target audience and achieve maximum success.
Aquisition of Community Center
Traditional authorities of Larteh have agreed to relase the Community Center as an assembling point for starting this reading project. This big space will host many children together with the township people at a time
Inviting Experts to Teach and Mentor Young Ones
Reading books for both English and the local language (Akwapim Twi & Larteh) will be made available.Traditional Leaders, Educationalists, Retired Teachers, Ex-Servicemen and other reading loving stakeholders will be invited and scheduled to read and discuss issues with the children.
Unit Grouping and Time Management
At the Community Centre, children will be grouped into four (4) units (KG-P1, P2-4, P5-6, JHS 1-3) to do a maximum of two (2) hours reading and discussions per session. The frequency of reading sessions per week will last for at least once a every week and while interest reading grows, the number of times per week shall be increased to two and to three
Formation of Smaller Reading Groups at Suburb / Household Levels
Going forward, another strategy is that, smaller reading groups will be formed at suburb/household levels. This strategy is expected to generate more interest in reading among children and also give them opportunity to interact with elders.
